Definitions of Mentoring

Core Concepts of Mentoring

"Mentoring is an alliance,
that creates a space for dialogue,
that results in reflection, action and learning."

Mentoring – developing insight to turn
hindsight into foresight!

Mentoring is a synergetic relationship - two or more people, engaged in a process that achieves more than each could alone.

Interaction with another that facilitates the process of metacognition.

“Conversations that create insight”

In Their Own Words

Scott Tunkin, of CSR told of learning about the industry from his mentor who has 20 years experience. CSR’s program has 25 young people, some of whom are graduates, teamed with managers. The entire group meets quarterly for breakfast and mentoring partners meet once a month.

The General Manager is actively involved and shows a personal interest in individuals.

A key feature of the program is communication. According to Scott, Sally Heron, the Program Coordinator, “keeps us constantly updated, asks: How are you going? She is genuinely interested as a friend”. The mentees organise after-hours social events and have built up a strong network that contributes to their work life and fun. Mentoring has given the employees a very positive attitude to the company. “We enjoy going to work, we talk about work when we’re out together, we think it’s great”. Mentees are responsible for their own learning during the two-year mentoring partnership. Scott advises: “be like a sponge”.
